Foxtail Millet / Thinai

Foxtail or Italian millet (setaria italica) is one of those forgotten grains that were a part of ancient Tamil culture. Foxtail millet, called Thinai in Tamil, is offered to Lord Muruga, the patron deity of Tamil Nadu.Foxtail millets are high in Iron content and these millets are totally pest-free. Foxtail not only not need any fumigants, but act as anti pest agents to store delicate pulses such as green gram. They also control blood sugar and cholesterol levels & increase HDL cholesterol.

Little Millet / Samai

Little Millets seeds are smaller than other millets, like foxtail millet, little millet also high in Iron content, high in fibre like Kodo and has high antioxidant activity. It helps in diabetes and diseases related stomach.The crop is resistant to adverse agro-climatic conditions of high drought as well as water logging. Little millets are being cultivated and used from the time of Indus Valley Civilisation. Similar to kodo millet and barnyard millet, little millets also have a hard husk layer which is indigestible. Removing this hard husk layer is the main task in processing these millets. Husk is removed by either manually pounding the grains or by using the grinding mill. It is rich in fibre and has low fat content. 

Barnyard Millet / Kuthiravali

Barnyard millets are high in fibre content, phosphorous and calcium. Barnyard has a low glycemic index and thus helps in type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease with regular intake of this millet.Barnyard millet (Oodhalu) is a fast growing cereal. It is grown in less fertile lands where other crops cannot be cultivated. It is a staple food for some communities in India where it is consumed during religious fasting. Therefore, Barnyard Millet in Bangalore has a high availability. Barnyard millets have a hard husk layer which is difficult to digest for humans. This husk layer is removed either by pounding or by using grinding machine. Barnyard Millet is a fair source of protein, which is highly digestible and is an excellent source of dietary fibre with good amounts of soluble  and insoluble fractions. The carbohydrate content is low and slowly digestible.

Pearl Millet / Kambu

The Organic Pearl Millet is the most widely grown type of millet and India is the largest producer of pearl millet. Pearl millet is a rich source of phosphorus, which plays an important part in the structure of body cells. The consumption of pearl millets helps in minimizing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Also, it prevents cancer, controls cholesterol, and asthma. Being a good source of magnesium and vitamins, these millets act as a cofactor in a number of enzymatic reactions. 

Finger Millet / Ragi /Kayavagu

Millet or Ragi as commonly well-known is frequently used in the South kitchens. It is rich source of minerals like iron, calcium and thiamine. It is one of the most excellent Health food for controlling diabetes and reducing weight and a cooling the body. Finger Millet also popularly known as Ragi is a staple in many places in south India. It is rich in calcium, dietary fiber and is gluten free.
